China: Empress Yang (30 June 1162 - 18 January 1233), consort of Emperor Ningzong, 13th ruler of the Song Dynasty and 4th ruler of the Southern Song Synasty (). Hanging scrol painting, c. 1194-1233. Empress Yang, formally known as Gongsheng and also known as Yang Meizi, was consort to Emperor Ningzong. She succeeded Empress Han and was known for her ambition and cunning, working alongside her close ally Shi Miyuan, who became grand chancellor. She served as co-regent of Emperor Lizong until her death. She is considered 'one of the most powerful empresses of the Song Dynasty'.
