Optical image of the centre of the Crab Nebula, also known as Messier 1. The nebula is the remnant of a supernova explosion observed in 1054AD, and consists mainly of hydrogen gas. The nebula is 6000 light years from Earth in the constellation Taurus. This image was made using the Very Large Telescope 'Kueyen' at the Cerro Paranal Observatory, Chile.
