An interesting feature of this companys power de-velopment is its system for supplying compressed air tothe various mines. At both the Cobalt Lake and BradyLake substations are identical compressor plants, each con-sisting of two two-stage air compressors. Each machine hasa capacity of 5,000 cubic feet of free air per minute, andis driven by a 1,000 horse-power motor. This gives a totalcapacity of 20,000 cubic feet of free air. The compressorsare equipped with the regular intercoolers, and each sub-station has installed an extra large water after-cooling sys-tem. From this the air passes through a large separator, and then through an air-cooling system. On account of thehigh temperature in the summer this latter system is onlyin use during the winter Main Concrete Dam, 50 feet high, on Matabitchouan River, showing Timber Log Slide. The air is delivered through steel pipes, with diametersvarying from three inches to ten inches, and the two sub-stations are connected by a ten-inch main. All the pipesare lapwelded, and the larger sizes come in 40-foot are fitted with wrought-iron forged flanges, weldedon, and each pipe has a weld in the cross section, madeby the oxyacetylene process. They have all been tested toa pressure of 300 pounds per square inch. All fittings, valves, etc., are made of steel, and the pipes have all beencoated on the inside with Doctor Smiths Solution. When the construction of these pipe lines was firstunder consideration, the question of expansion joints wastaken up, but it was finally decided not to install them as fel i l*Aj i f w ^^^Nv \. ^^Bi£„*- HMMUL. ?
