He enit-d as a private in Company C, FirstRegiment Vermont Cavalry, September 9, 1861 ; wassworn into the United States service, ()ctober 3, 1861, atthe age of twenty-three years; commissioned first lieu-tenant, Company C,( )ctober 14, 1861,and captain, Novem-ber iS, 1861 ; mustered November 19, 1861, with the fieldand staff of the First Regiment Vermont Cavalry, to servefor three years. Commissioned major, October 30, 1862 ;colonel, June 4, 1864. Appointed brevet brigadier-gen-eral of volunteers, February 22, 1865, and brigadier-gen-eral of volunteers, May 19, 1865. Appointed brevetmajor-general of volunteers, March 30, 1865, for gallantand meritorious services. He was placed in command of the Seventh Regiment,Michigan Cavalry, March 2, 1864, by
