The burning Reichstag building On February 27, 1933, the Reichstag building was destroyed by a fire staged by the National Socialists. It served the Hitler government as a pretext for a campaign of terror, primarily against communists and other anti-fascists. In this context, the Bulgarian communist Georgi Dimitroff was arrested and tried as an innocent man in the Reichstag fire trial.
