A system of surgery : theoretical and practical . iter, alarge swelling extended from the upper third ofthe neck behind, to the highest part of the occi-put, concealing the forms of all the bones whichit covered, except the spinous process of the axis, which appeared unduly prominent. He couldperform the nodding, but not the rotating motion,of the neck. The vertical axis of the head wasadvanced perceptibly too far forward, in com-parison with the vertical axis of the neck; theeffect apparently of the head having been trans-ported to the i^ont slightly beyond its properplane in relation to the spine. The disease wasseen to be atlo-axial; and he was removed tothe hospital. Progressive paraplegia soon com-menced, and it proceeded downward ; first, onearm became weak and then paralysed; shortlyafterwards, the other also became weak and thenparalysed ; and the lower extremities followedthe same successive course. But before the legswere totally paralysed, he died ; his death havingbeen accelerated by a severe attack of bronchitis. Fig. The specimen from which this figui-e was taken wasremoved from the body of a man found dead inthe streets. There was fracture at the base ofthe skull, all round and at a short distance fromthe foramen magnum; the boundaries of theIracture being seen in the figure, a, a, portionof occipital bone, insulated by the fracture ; b,anterior tubercle, on anterior arch of atlas; c, posterior tubercle, on posterior arch of axis; d, odontoid process of axis. Its situation cor-responds nearly to the centre of the vertebralcanal, at the level of the foramen magnum andatlas; e, body of spinous process of axis. Aboutthree-fifths of the articulating surfaces of theatlas have been displaced forward on the corre-sponding surfaces of this bone, thereby accountingfor the projection anteriorly of the front segmentof the atlas ; /, spinous process of axis. Theposterior segment of the ring of the atlas crossesthe canal of the axis nearly in its middle. Thedi
