Twoyears later he was renominated,but was defeated by ThomasCorwin. In 1843 the same can-didates were before the people,and Mr. Shannon was electedgovernor. In the followingspring he resigned his office toaccept the mission to returned on the annexationof Texas, and resumed the prac-tice of law. In 1852 he waselected to congress from theBelmont district, and was laterappointed by President Pierceterritorial governor of resigned after serving fourteen months, and be-gan the practice of law in Lecompton. When thecapital was removed from that city to Topeka, Kan-sas having been admitted as a state. Gov.
