The fraternitywas organized in response to a long-felt need for some suitable way of recognizing the merits of intercollegiate orators and debaters. Such amovement had been agitated by a number of colleges throughout the country for several years, when at the State Prohibition Oratorical Contest,held at Manhactan, Kansas, on March 21, 1912, John A. Shields, of Ottawa University, and E. A. Vaughn, of Kansas State Agricultural College,were designated as a committee to represent the interests of Kansas colleges in the movement. At the Old Line State Oratorical Contest at Winfield, Kansas, on March 29, 1912, C. J. Boddy, of Kansas Wesleyan University, was includedon the above named committee. These men secured the appointment of similar committees in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and several state committees agreed upon an
