Swollen leg due to cancer. Swollen leg (right) of a 52-year-old woman. The swelling is caused by inadequate drainage of lymph fluid (lymphoedema), and this is caused by a swelling of the lymph nodes in the groin. This in turn is a secondary adenocarcinoma. Cancer often spreads through the bloodstream or the lymph system, and the prognosis is poor once it has spread.
