The Belgrade Aviation Museum, Serbia - Mil Mi-4A Soviet transport helicopter (NATO-Codename: Hound)
By Stalin’s order, Michail Leontievitc Mil’s designer team developed medium transport helicopter Mi-4. Since beginning of their work till the first test flight of prototype 1951, only eight months passed, and series production started already in 1952. The main problem in design were main rotor’s blades, which in the start couldn’t bear major loading, so the "life” of the previous rotor’s blades was limited to only 100 to 150 hours. Besides three crew members, helicopter could carry 10 fully equipped soldiers, or 16 passengers, 8 wounded on stretches, or at least up to kg of freight, and was used as an anti submarine helicopter. The production ceased in the SSSR 1969, but was built under license till 1979 in China. There were produced about examples, serving in a number of countries. Beside the fact, in the early sixties Mi-4 was the most numerous helicopter in the air force of the USSR.
