He wasgrandson of Nicholas, mentioned above. Inhis early days he worked on a farm, but ashis strength was unequal to this work hemoved to Lewiston, where he first worked ina cotton mill, and later taught school, and inthis manner earned his way through an acad-emy, and meanwhile he showed his literarygifts in writing several humorous sketches,. ^-^z^^ cf^ /ls~^. STATE OF MAINE. 2051 several of which were published in local papers,and one of them in a Boston paper prominentin that day. As the severe winters of his na-tive state were too rigorous for his constitu-tion, he decided to try his fortune in the na-tional capital, but when he had proceeded asfar as Baltimore his funds were so low that hedecided to make the remainder of the journeyon foot, and on the last day of December, 1847,while performing the last few miles of histrip, he was overtaken by a man with a loadof produce for the Washington market, whoinvited him to ride, and thus he entered thecity at the time the bells were ringing out theold year, almost penniless, and without anovercoat. He was fortunate enough to pro-cure work immediately, as route agent for theBaltimore Sun, and a few months thereafterwas employed as a writer for the WashingtonNezvs, and also sent letters and charactersketches of noted men
