Scarlet wax cap fungus (Hygrocybe punicea) mushrooms growing in a grassy area. These are the edible fruiting bodies of this rare fungus. The conical caps are greasy and waxy to the touch. There are gills on the underside of the caps. Spores ripen in these gills and drift on the wind to form a new fungal body or mycelium. This fungus is found in grassy pastures and heaths. Photographed in the Peak District National Park, UK.
