There are few more romantic loealities tlian that jiart of the Valley of the Raiuapo whichis traversed by the Erie Railway. Eleven lakes, perched high en the mountains that are adistinguishing characteristic of this portion of New York state, send their tumbling outletsinto the valley and form the stream known as the Ramapo River. There are forty of theselakes within a few miles of the spot where the Erie Railway enters the valley. The entranceis made at Slffern, through a great gap in the Hudson Highhxnds, which extend north-east-ward, in rugged peaks, some of them 1,800 feet in heiglit. The railroad presents the evervarying scenery of the valley to the tourist for a of 16 miles.
