Bdellium is like myrrh in its pro-perties, but is not considered so good ; it ismoister than myrrh, not brittle, and hasnot so agreeable an odour. It is rarelyused in this country. B. Mulcul yields a resin known in Scindeunder the name of Googul, and in Persiaas Mukul. The late Dr. Stocks has shownthat this is identical with the Bdellium ofDioscorides and of the Scriptures. Thetree producing it is abundant in Scinde,in rocky ground, and the resin is collectedby making incisions into the tree andletting the resin fall on the ground, henceit is mixed with much dirt and many im-purities. The resin has cordial and stimu-lant properties. It is given as a medicineto horses in Cabul; it is also used as aplaster for boils. It is burnt as incense, and is mixed by builders with the mortarused in the construction of houses, whendurability is an object. A similar resinwith the same native name is obtained inother parts of India, from other species ofthe Balsamodendron Mukul. B. pubescens, according to Dr. Stocks, furnishes Bayee Balsam, which is brittle, but tasteless and inodorous. The barkof this tree peels off in thin layers likethat of the Birch. As is so frequentlythe case, there is considerable doubt as tothe plants producing these several gum-resins, though it is agreed on all handsthat the plants, whatever their speciesmay be, belong to this genus; nay, it isnot unlikely that more than one speciesmay furnish the same kind of resin. is cultivated in this country asan ornamental stove plant. [M. T. M.] BALSAMORRHIZA. A genus of thecomposite family (Composite?). Seven spe-cies are enumerated, all of them dwarf perennial herbs, with chiefly radical leaves, which are heart-shaped with long stalks,or pinnatifid. Their stems are simple, usually bearing a solitaryflower-head,whichis about two inche
