The procedure is to repair one track at a time and tomaintain uninterrupted car operation over both trackswithout blocking vehicular traffic except on one side ofthe street. The gang is composed of the following men: Oneforeman, one man breaking up asphalt, five men pre-paring concrete sub-base and wheeling remixed asphalt,one man feeding charges to the mixer, one man paint-ing paving stones with hot asphalt and applying cement. MILWAUKEE PAVING DISCHARGING HOT REMIXED ASPHALT to surface of finished pavement, one man running themixer, three men raking, smoothing and tamping, andone night watchman, and one teamster. In addition toripping up the old asphalt and relaying the pavement,this gang also keeps the street in safe operating condi-tion. A two-horse general-utility team also is a partof this outfit. On the job recently completed, a part of the workconsisted in relaying the asphalt between the granitegage blocks on a busy double-track line. The procedureof the work from front to rear is as follows: The oldasphalt surface is first picked up and broken into piecesabout 6-in. square, the smaller sizes being more readilymelted. The mixer is charged with approximately 8cu. ft. of this old material and new asphalt in varyingamounts, usually about 10 lb. per charge, is added inaccordance with the character of the old mix.
