For at boththose points there is a natural water shed less thanten marine leagues from the coast. But in the regionof the Dalton Trail, the frontier, to accord with thespirit of the Anglo-Muscovite Treaty of 1825, shouldbe marked much farther inland than the temporaryline agreed upon by the modus vivendi. In thismodus vivendi, the United States acted most gener-ously towards the British Empire, which at that timewas in an awkward position. Only nine days before,October nth, war had begun in South Africa be-tween the English and the Boers.
