A little warm sunshine during the closing days of winter is a '^"S^ sufficient encouragement for this bright spring visitor to put in an appearance, even before the snow is fairly gone. As may be inferred, it is a very hardy plant, successfully re- sisting the rigors and frosts of the early season, and also enduring neglect and careless treat- ment oft times with surprising facility. In this latitude, the flowers usually appear in March, and continue to bloom during the first week or two in April. They are shapely in form, and of bright and handsome colors. For borders, or in masses, they are quite attractive. In early autumn is the time to plant. The bulbs may be set about three inches apart each way, and covered with two inches of soil. To guard against frost, which is apt to throw* out the bulbs, it is necessary to cover with loose straw or leaves before winter sets in. For house culture the Crocus is well adapted, producing flowers freely Six or eight bulbs may be planted close together—almost touching—in a box or pot, or in a basket of moss. Light and rich soil should be used. Notwithstanding the Crocus is able to endure hardship, and wiU somehow manage to subsist in a poor soil, it delights in fertility, and will flower more profusely if treated as generously as it deserves to Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appea
