The brigade post of com-mand was established in Gesnes, thetown where Lieutenant Johns had been killed. This town had been aban-doned and subsequently had been retaken by the Thirty-second Divisionsupported by the Fifty-eighth Brigade. North of Gesnes and northwest ofRomagne the artillery regiments were placed in the well defiladed woodedvalleys of the great Kriemhilde Stellung.
