THE PALACE OF WHITEHALL, as it appeared in the reign of James the Second, 1834
Artist/engraver/cartographer: From An Original Drawing In The Possession Of Thomas Griffiths ESQ. Provenance: "Londina Ilustrata Graphic and Historic Memorials of Monasteries, Churches, Chapels, Schools, Charitable Foundations, Palaces, Halls, Courts, Procefsions, Places Of Early Amusement and Modern & Present Theatres, In the Cities And Suburbs of London & Westminister." edited by Rob Wilkinson. Type: Antique copperplate engraved print on stiff, good quality paper. The Palace of White Hall was the main London residence of English monarchs from 1530 until 1698 when all except Inigo Jones's 1622 Banqueting House burned down. By then, it was the largest palace in Europe with over 1,500 rooms, overtaking the Vatican and Versailles. It gave its name, Whitehall, to the street on which many UK government departments are located, and indeed to central government itself. The Banqueting House, outside which King Charles I was beheaded in 1649, remains.
