A wilful patient may leave her bed too soon andexpose herself, thinly clad, to cold (Fig. 459). Feverfrom Constipation.—Schroeder1 says that among thecauses, aside from infection and local inflammations, which, withspecial frequency, produce fever in the puerperal state, overdis-tention of the intestines with fecal masses should be given afore*most place. This statement is, I think, exaggerated. Everypractitioner of obstetrics, however, sees examples of this sort ofpuerperal lexer (Fig. 460).. Fig. 460.—Chart of a woman constipated for si\ days in the latter part of thepuerperal state. There had been one movement of the bowels, five days after labor, and then none for -i\ days. A large dose of castor oil and an enema reduced thetemperature to normal in a few hours. The temperature-chart, figure 460, is that of a woman inthe Philadelphia Hospital who had had but one evacuation ofthe bowels—on the fifth day—in the eleven days succeedingdelivery. The temperature rose to a great height, but fell im-mediately after a large dose of castor oil and the administrationof an enema, which produced an enormous fecal evacuation. Fever from Reflex Irritation.— Physical irritation, as well aspsychical, may be reflected in general elevation ^( the body-temperature during the puerperal state. The irritating point ismost often in the breast. There may frequently be found, inwomen of sensitive nervous organism, a well-marked fever, which Lehrbuch, 8. Aufl., S.
