An Angolan black and white colobus monkey at the Colobus Trust in Diani forest, Mombasa Kenya

One primate species that is endemic to these forests and is under extreme pressure from human development is Colobus angolensis palliatus, the Angolan black and white colobus monkey. This monkey is extremely rare with fewer than 13,000 individuals globally - less than that of gorillas. In and around the resort town of Diani, there are c. 270 individuals. This constitutes the second largest population in Kenya with the Diani Forest as the stronghold for the species as it is the last primary forest patch in the area. This makes Diani an important area for conservation and securing the Diani Forest critical.
