Agostino Ramelli (), Italian engineer and author of 'Le Diverse et Artificiose Machine' (1588). This work contains nearly 200 designs for devices, many of them water-raising machines including pumps, mills, fountains, and wells. This portrait of Ramelli is from the title pages of this work. The Latin caption at upper centre states that Ramelli is portrayed in his 57th year (in 1588, the year the book was published). It also gives his name in Latin: Augustinus de Ramellis. The caption also states his birthplace of Mesanzena (Ponte Tresa in Switzerland).
