"The Roots" Fountain in Paseo La Princesa San Juan commemorates the 5th centennial of the New World and honors the heritage of the Puertorican people.


The "Raices Fountain" was built from 1991-1992 to commemorate the 500 years anniversary of the discovery of the Americas. It has a basin representing the sea and a pedestal that represents the island of Puerto Rico. The horse emerges with a mounted female looking and searching into the horizon. The central figure with extended arms represents freedom. To the left, the figures depict the Puertorican family and to the right the figures represents the African ancestors that were brought to the islands from Africa.
