Macrophotograph showing the architecture of an individual Inmos T414 transputer, a chip which combines establised microprocessor technology with memory (as RAM - random access memory) and 4 serial input/ouput (I/O) links. The transputer (name is a hybrid of transistor and computer) may be regarded as a computer on a single chip. The two parallel oblongs at left house 2 Kbytes of RAM; at top right of the memory is the 32-bit microprocessor (the central processing unit - CPU), and at bottom right the 4 serial I/O links that allow communication with up to 4 other chips. Potential uses are as autonomous components in a new generation of parallel computers.
