INTRODUCTION TOPATRICK CAREY As about our last constituent, so about this, there has been (thoughthere need no longer be) a certain uncertainty. In 1819 Sir (then still Mr.,though just on his promotion) Walter Scott published the book whichis here reproduced, with the title also given. He had nine years previously,in the Edinbnrgh\A7inual Register, communicated specimens of it from theMS. which had been given to him by John Murray. All that he thenknew about the author (and Scott, let it be remembered, while he knew agreat deal about English history and literature, knew hardly any part betterthan the seventeenth century) is contained in the Preface, also reproducedinfra. There were, however, other things that he might have known bothconcerning the MS. itself and concerning its probable author, and theselatter would certainly have interested him.
