Spinal cord injury due to slipped disc. Coloured CT (computed tomography) scan showing the spinal cord in a vertebra which has suffered a herniated or ruptured spinal disc. At centre, the spinal cord (yellow) reveals areas of pressure (red) caused by the disc injury. Here, the spinal cord is surrounded by a vertebra coloured white. Rupture or degeneration of a spinal disc (known as spondylosis) causes part of the disc to slip out of the intervertebral space, and the vertebrae on either side to rub against each other. The spinal cord or related nerves may subsequently be compressed. CT scans use X-rays to create \slice\" images of regions of the body."
