Tomb of Queen Nefertari. Stairs leading down to the burial chamber within the tomb of Queen Nefertari. Nefertari, who lived around 1300- 1255 BC, was the first wife of the Egyptian pharaoh Ramses II. Her tomb is located in the Valley of the Queens, near the ancient city of Thebes, Egypt. It is one of the best preserved and most ornate of all known burial sites. The interior walls are painted with images of the Queen, animals, deities, hieroglyphs and symbols that relate to her journey through the afterlife. The tomb was discovered in 1904 by the Italian archaeologist Ernesto Schiaparelli. In 2003 the tomb was closed to the general public.
