He was a mission-ary bishop, and told several anecdotesillustrating the fact that he found his pre-vious knowledge of medicine highly usefulamong the people for whose spiritualwelfare he now labored. But he musthave felt that medical knowledge wasscarcely needed at Guingamp, when helooked at the rows of hardy, rosy oldfaces before him, that spoke eloquently ofyears of hard work and robust thousand devout souls gatheredthere to receive absolution of sins, tomake thank-offerings for mercies received,and offer votive gifts and prayers for bless-ings on flocks and fields, and for a bounti-ful harvest. 16 LITTLE JOURNEYS ABROAD.
