Unlike Moldova, following the dissolution of the USSR the de facto sovereign state of Pridnestrovia chose not to separate from the Russian Federation and this escalated into a military conflict with Moldova in March 1992. A ceasefire was concluded in July 1992 and Transnistria is now an unrecognized independent presidential republic with its own government, parliament, military, police, postal system, and currency.
