Probably one of the most important features in the open-ing up of the Klondike district and other gold mining areaswithin the Yukon Territory is the system of road construction,Mhich has done so much to stimulate and develop the mineralresources of the Territory, and thereby contributed in nosmall degree to the gold production of the world. The construction of a system of roads in the Yukon Terri-tory was a colossal undertakinc,-. When it is remembered thatin 1899 and 1900 miners were receiving as high as $1 an hour,it is possible to form some idea of the expenditure to be en-countered. In 1899 workmen on the road were paid at therate of 85 cents per hour; in 1900 they received 80 cents, andsince 1901 they have been paid at the rate of 75 cents an 1899 a team could not be hired for less than $25 a day.
