My spirits were somewhat cooledby the information that there wasstill lots of ice in the Bay, and whena mile from the beach, this fact wasbrought home to us by the chilly bay was covered with drift ice asfar as the eye could see. Instead ofseeing the usual large flocks of Her-ring and Ring-billed Gulls, Commonand Caspian Terns and an occasionalLoon, there were only a few scatteredgulls.
