In order to iron the shirton the side and the sleeve in this manner, the rollsmust be longer and the machine heavier than is re-quired to iron the sleeve only. The ironing of bodies has long been a perplexingquestion, and a great many plans have been introducedfor ironing this part of the shirt, but all plans seemto have failed, except one, and that is, ironing theshirt flat, as it would naturally lie when it is to befolded. If the body of a shirt is ironed on a rollmachine similar to the one already described for iron-ing the backs, it is sure to put the fullness of the skirtin the wrong place, and render it difficult to foldneatly. Thus, it is necessary to lay the shirt, flat, withthe bosom up, stretch all the fullness, and lay neces- — 121 —. Fig. 44. The Watson Body Ironer is shown in Fig. 45. Itis the invention of Mr. L. H. Watson. This machineconsists of a stationary bed, large enough to admit ashirt being laid on it at full length. It has a devicefor clamping the yoke in position, and a stretcher forremoving the wrinkles from the skirt. Above thetable is suspended a heated roll, which is brought intocontact with the shirt at the lower end of the is then caused to move from the bosom towards thebottom of the skirt, and as the roll moves forward thestretching device takes up all the fullness, allowingthe roller to produce an even, flat finish to the wholefront of t
