Detail from one of the mosaic panels set in the ambulatory vaulting of the Mausoleum of Santa Costanza, Rome depicting scenes from wine making and harvesting. Here a cart loaded with grapes is drawn by oxen. The Romans used oxen to do the heavy work on the panels, dating from the 4th c (though much restored in the 19th c), depict the bounty of nature and plenty in Roman agriculture. They display a mix of Christian and pagan symbolism and imagery, showing the transition of Rome from a pagan to a Christian city during the rule of the Emperor Constantine.
