Close-up of a pair of huge telamons on the façade of Palazzo dei Giganti (Giant's Palace) in the centre of Genoa, Liguria, Italy
Palazzo dei Giganti ("Palace of Giants") was built in 1896 by the architect Dario Carbone and engineer Carlo Fuselli, in Via XX Settembre, and was the first building in Genoa built with reinforced concrete. In its beautifully decorated facade, you can see eight statues of huge telamons or Atlantes acting as columns, holding the cornice on the shoulders, sculpted by the Italian sculptor Vincenzo Michelangelo "Michele" Sansebastiano.
