The breathing apparatus carried by these men were devised in 1903 by the Draeger Company of Germany and operated in a similar way as the Siebe-Gorman self-contained devices. Draeger breathing devices and other safety equipment grew so popular in the mine rescue business that the word "draegerman" eventually became a synonym for an underground rescue worker (Webster's Third New International Dictionary).
