Tanzanite crystals have distinct pleochroism - clearly seen in this image - showing either purple, blue or slate grey depending upon the angle they are viewed from. There might also be a slight colour change in incandescent light when stones may appear more violet. Tanazanite is an alternative birthstone for December.
