The whole costumebears a striking resemblance to that with which we arewell acquainted on coins and sculptures of the Parthianand Sassanian periods. The head-dress reminds me ofthat occurring upon the skull under the dish-cover justalluded to. The whole visible surface of the coffin iscovered with a thick glazing of rich green enamel on theexterior, and of blue within the aperture, the formercolour probably arising from chemical decomposition andlong exposure. 204 SLIPPER-SHAPED M VM EXTERNAL ORNAMENTATION. 205 The material of which the coffins are composed is yellowclay, mixed with straw, and half-baked.
