Neutral calcium phosphate and magnesium phosphate, beingsoluble only in acid urine, are precipitated as soon as the urineturns alkaline in consequence of the formation of ammonium car-bonate. Magnesium phosphate combines with the free ammoniumand forms ammonio-magnesium phosphate. This is always dis-tinctly crystalline. The original shape is a prism, similar to acofiin-cover, hence the name coffin-shaped crystals (Plate 17). Butthe most marked deviations and combinations occur, so differentfrom the original forms that they can only be recognized by thetransition formations—e. g., the fern-shaped crystals of Plate 19.
