The old city - Ano Poli - is located north of the center of Thessaloniki, which was not covered by a fire in 1917. Since 1980, this very upper part of the city has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, winding cobbled narrow streets, old squares, ancient buildings of Greek and Ottoman architecture have been preserved. Previously, Ano Poli was a fortress, he was surrounded by high walls. Some of the walls of the Ottoman and Byzantine periods have survived to our times.
