Group of Macaws

Parrots or psittacines are birds that include about 353 species. They all an erect stance and a curved beak. All parrots have two toes at the front of each foot and two at the back. Parrots can be found in most warm regions of the world, including India, Southeast Asia and West Africa. By far the greatest number of parrot species come from Australasia, South America, and Central America. Parrots seem to be highly social and can imitate human speech or other sounds though parrots do not have vocal cords. Sound is accomplished by expelling air across the mouth so they are really just whistling in different variations. Parrots are kept as pets particularly macaws, amazons, cockatoos, lovebirds, budgerigars and parakeets because of their colouration and their ability to imitate human speech. Some parrot species - large cockatoos, amazons, and macaws, have very long life-spans of up to 80 years.
