One of the mosl remarkable pieces in the collection illustrates both the skill and the bizarre fancyof the archaic potter. A large vase, having a flar-ing rim and a subcubical body, is supported by twogrotesque human figures, whose backs are set inst opposite ends of the vessel, the legs wideapart affording firm support. The heads of the two figures project forward from the shoulders of the e, and are flattened so as to give long, oval outlines to the crowns, which are truncated and furnished with si it-like openings. One of the most beautiful vases in the collectionbelongs to the polychrome group, of which theMuseum contains but three examples.
