Egg selection for IVF. Scientist using a light microscope and pipette to select harvested ova (eggs) for use in in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The chosen ova will be injected with sperm to fertilise them and the resultant zygotes will be grown in the lab until they reach an early stage of embryonic development. They will then be implanted in a patient's uterus. This can result in multiple births. Photographed at the Marques Institute, Barcelona, Spain. The Institute is the first in Europe to offer embryo adoption, where the embryos implanted into a woman's uterus are not biologically linked to her or her partner.
