K, 138th Pennsylvania Volunteers, aged twenty-seven years,was wounded at Cedar Creek, Virginia, October 19, 1801, by a conoidal musket ball, whichstruck the external condyle of the left femur and penetrated the knee joint. On the sameday, he was admitted to field hospital; his wound was dressed; and, on the 21th, he wastransferred to Baltimore, and admitted to the Jarvis Hospital, where Acting Assistant Sur-geon B. B. Miles administered ether, and amputated the thigh, at the lower third, by thecircular operation.
