Chita meteorite fragment. This is a fragment of an iron meteorite, a type of meteorite that originates from the core of protoplanets that were created and destroyed in the early history of the solar system. This sample, 20 centimetres long, is from the Chita meteorite, named for the area in Russia where it was found after it fell to Earth from space. The metallic surface has been melted and reformed by the heat generated as it passed through the Earth's atmosphere.
