Streptococcus in lung tissue. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria (blue) in lung tissue from a patient that died from pneumonia. S. pneumoniae are oval, Gram-positive bacteria. They are part of the normal human bacterial flora and are carried by many without causing infection. However, if a patient's immune system is already compromised due to viral pneumonia the bacteria can also infect the lungs causing a fatal disease.
