Wherefore, to help you to practise this devotion, I will heregive you a list of some eminent persons who have borne his name, andupon this account received from God the particular favors He bestowedupon him. I shall begin with the patriarch Joseph, who, though he livedso many ages before our great St. Joseph, yet was a type of him ; and,probably, upon that account, might have received his name, with thoseother extraordinary favors God bestowed upon him. The first, therefore, in the list of those who bore the name of Josephis the patriarch Joseph, of the old law ; on whom the Holy Ghost gives avery great eulogium in the forty-ninth chapter of Ecclesiasticus, calling. The character, also, that the Holy Ghost givesof the patriarch agrees with our Joseph in a far more eminent degree thanit even did to the patriarch, he being a prince and ruler, not only over hisbrethren, but governor to the Mother and Son of God, being their supportin all their necessities, and saving Him who was to save not only one, butall nations throughout the world.
