Canine and feline surgery .. . ordinary table in the abdominal position. The method of securing an animal is to first place the clovehitch on the jaws as previously described, then a hobble tightlyround each leg (in the fore leg above the carpus and in the hind 20 CANINE AND FELINE SURGERY. legs above the tarsus) ; secure the fore legs first by passing theke)s through two of the holes in the table and giving them atwist, then the hind hobbles in the same way, pulling the hindlegs down together. With very large dogs it is sometimes alsoa good plan to pass a piece of stout webbing over the back andloins and tie it under the table. The chief precaution to takeis to see that the legs are just sufficiently wide apart and wellstretched out to allow of no violent struggling. When thehobbling is done properly it is astonishing with what ease ananimal can be controlled. This places the patient flat on itsabdomen, and for convenience will be referred to, when speakingof positions for operative purposes, as the abdominal Fig. 10. Photograph showing animal fixcil on the operating table in the dorsal position. When it is necessary to operate upon the abdomen or underparts of the body the animal is turned upon its back and fixedin a similar way, extra care, however, being here taken with thefore limbs, so as not to stretch them out too tightly and thusinjure the muscles attaching the fore limb to the chest. Thiswill for descriptive purposes be termed the dorsal position. For operations on the sides or flank the animal can readily belaid on either side. These will be referred to in the text as theright and left lateral positions respectively. Since this pattern of table has been introduced into the Free SAFETY OF THIS METHOD OF SECURING. 21 Out-patients Clinique more than 4000 animals have beensecured in one or other of the above-mentioned positions with-out accident. Another pattern of operating table has been recently devisedand described by Mr B. P. ,
