Detail of a Renovated Window and Shutters With Original Sandstone Blocks Showing Marks Made by the Stone Masons. Old Wool Warehouse, Exeter Quay.

This historic building was initially built as a wool warehouse around 1835, it was also the home to exhibits in the Exeter Maritime Museum. More recently, it was renovated into luxury apartments and office space over modernised shops. The image captures the architecture and handiwork of its historic builders. The outside facing soft sandstone still shows the patterns left by their tools to fashion the stones into rectangular blocks. Exeter's wealth was created through wool which was produced locally and finished in the Cricklepit area (Now headquarters for the Devon Wildlife Trust). Wool was loaded onto ships for export and returning imports included olive oil, salt cod and wine. The Custom House was built as a base to collect tax on these goods. Although the establishment of the railway in 1844 meant the decline of the Quay's commercial importance Georgian and Victorian developments give this area its current character, which remains one of the most popular and attractive areas of the city with the historic architecture housing many restaurants and pubs and boutique shops.
