Frithiof approaches Helge, the brother of Ingeborg, after King Bele's death, and asks for Ingeborg's hand in marriage.


According to Scandinavian mythology, Frithiof, son of a farmer who is also a great Viking, falls in love with Ingeborg, the daughter of King Bele, who gives Ingeborg to the old King Ring. After many adventures and mishaps, Frithiof finally weds Ingeborg. In this illustration dating to 1908, Frithiof approaches Helge, the brother of Ingeborg, after King Bele's death, and asks for Ingeborg's hand in marriage. He is refused as being unworthy. Frithiof, in a rage, takes his prized sword and cuts the shield of Helge, which is hanging on a tree, in two.
