Goose barnacles (Lepas testudinata) on sea bamboo kelp (Ecklonia maxima) washed up on a beach. These marine crustaceans attach themselves to a rock, weed, or other substrate as adults. The front part of the head is fixed to the substrate, whilst the rest of the head and the body are encased in two hard calcareous shells, which can be opened and closed. Each barnacle possesses six flexible legs which it extends out of the shell in order to catch its plankton food. Photographed at Pringle Bay, Western Cape, South Africa.
